esXpress – The Enterprise backup solution

by Patrick Redknap on April 23, 2009

We’ve been doing this blog for just over a week now so it’s about time I talked about our sponsor and their main product esXpress.

PHD Virtual Technoligies Inc. pioneered ”virtual backup appliances” (VBAs) in 2006, using virtual machines to backup virtual machines and have since become an award-winning product of choice for data protection in virtual environments.

It should be noted that in VMWare’s latest announcement of vSphere 4 they have included VMware Data Recovery which is basically an entry level backup solution similar to, but not as advanced as esXpress’s ‘Enterprise backup solution’.

So how does it work? Well… esXpress uses virtual backup appliances (VBAs) – small virtual machines – that can be deployed in minutes on an ESX server to autonomously conduct hot full or “virtual full” backups of all your Virtual Machines. esXpress VBAs operate outside of the ESX console, leveraging a virtual appliance architecture and our own innovative disk throttling so backups can be run during business hours with no impact on VM performance on the ESX server.

esXpress backs up virtual disks at the block level, delivering incremental backup that can be de-duplicated at the source before being sent to one or more local and/or remote storage targets simultaneously.
The result? Backups are smaller and faster, storage capacity lasts longer, and your entire infrastructure – VMs, hosts and networks – performs better.
